The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is a health care reform law in the United States. It was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010.
The Affordable Care Act ( ACA ) aims to expand healthcare coverage for lower-income Americans. The bill includes residents in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, and all of Palm Beach County. It requires all Americans to have health insurance and large employers to provide it while subsidizing the many citizens who do not have employer coverage.
The ACA also provides for free preventative care and limits the growth of healthcare costs. The ACA has been subject to much debate, with opponents criticizing it for not going far enough in its coverage and supporters claiming it is a step in the right direction.
Many Americans are now eligible to receive affordable health insurance and the improved quality of life benefits that come with it. Those who had been denied in the past or charged large monthly premiums due to preexisting conditions can now find affordable coverage. Anyone whose financial circumstances prevented them from obtaining health care now has options. Any plan available through the Healthcare Marketplace must cover things like:
Doctor visits
Emergency services
Hospital stays
Pediatric services
Maternity and newborn care
Preventive and wellness services
Prescription drugs
Lab services
Mental health services
Substance abuse services
And more
Millions of Americans have already signed up and received quality health care thanks to the Affordable Care Act. How much you save on your plan and what you pay depends on your household income compared to the federal poverty level (FPL). Household incomes within 100% to 400% of the federall poverty level qualify for a premium subsidy.
Other than income, other factors determine eligibility. You cannot be currently incarcerated. You must also live in the United States to receive coverage. A U.S. citizenship is required, there are however exceptions to this such as:
Cuban or Haitian entrants
Those with asylee or refugee status (If granted employment authorization or under 14 years old)
Temporary protected status (TPS)
Lawful permanent or temporary resident (LPR/LTR)
Anyone with a work or student visa
Right now there are over 265,00 residents in Palm Beach County without health coverage. Thanks to the ACA bill, everyone now has a chance to get health insurance regardless of their income.
